I started a flat of leafy greens tonight. It's the first time I've ever planted from seed. Woohoo! I took the leap. I got one of those starter trays that have soil pellets included. You just soak the pellets and plant your seeds directly in them. You're supposed to "fluff" the planting mixture a bit. I did that and also sprinkled some dry starting medium on top.
I planted
- Heirloom Arugula
- Viroflay Heirloom Spinach
- Emerald Oak Lettuce
- Cosmos - Seashells mix flowers for fun
Right now my rig is what you might call ghetto. I have a 3 compact fluorescent bulbs clipped to my work bench peg board and the tray is raised on 2 bricks to get as close to the lights as possible. Here's what I know about the lights - a scientific analysis.
One of the lights is pretty big - bigger than your average lamp bulb. And it's bright. Maybe the equivalent of 100 watts. The color is reddish. The other two bulbs are cooler in color - more blueish. And they're smaller in size and not as bright either. Maybe the equivalent of 60 watt bulbs.
So, I'll want to get real about the lighting this weekend. A project - yippee!

I've had great results with this stuff. And other people must do well with it to, because its not uncommon for it to sell out during the height of seed starting season.
I also really like Asheville Ag (now known as fifth gardening season). I may actually go there tomorrow to pick up some stuff.
Have fun setting up your lighting!
