magical fruit?

As I sat in the Newark airport today, I came across a NY Times article in the Food Section about some sort of rare, exotic fruit that actually has the ability to make other foods take on completely different flavors.  For example:  lemons would taste sweet, beer would taste like chocolate, etc.  They were small, looked a bit like cherries.

Anyone out there experienced one of these fruits?  Apparently Magic Fruit Parties are becoming popular.  People just go, eat a fruit, hold it in their mouths for about 5 minutes before swallowing, and then get to experience an hour or so of exotic new taste.

It's like Willy Wonka meets Timothy Leary...

I've heard of these! I think from someone on twitter. Did they have a name other than magic fruit?

Can't wait for someone to plant it. Some pictures required!

I read that article, too, and maybe I'm an old fuddy duddy but it sounds yucky to me. Fascinating, but yucky. I think that things taste the way they taste for a reason, gol darn it, and folks shouldn't go messing around with that!

I think I agree with Alexis. I might want to try it once just to experience it. But a lemon sorbet - Guinness Stout smoothie just seems wrong no matter how it tastes.

makes me think of Sam I am - do you like green eggs and ham?! Personally, I do NOT like them, even in the rain, but are we just reacting to change?

Re: lance and garbonzo

I'm guessing I won't be growing one based on this:

"The miracle fruit cannot be grown outside in the United States except Southen Florida"

Found this info here:

I think I have enough houseplants to keep up with at the momement. Not to mention we probably don't keep the heat cranked up hot enough during the winter to please this plant.
