We Must Look Like a Rabbit Hostel

Over a month ago I adopted/rescued our current pet rabbit. She started out in our house but eventually moved to our front porch. She's a lucky little lady that gets homegrown pak choi, spinach and lettuce on a regular basis.

Well, Tuesday I took my jury duty lunch break at home. After making/eating a salad and doing a smidget of gardening I really needed to get back.

I call my dog, Shiloh, and she is no where to be found. I call her a few more times and nothing.  I then start walking around the house to look for her. I turn the corner to discover she has something in her mouth. Pretty sure it was an animal, so I told her to drop it. When I got closer I discovered that is a baby bunny. It doesn't even have its eyes open. It appears to still be alive and sort of swims through the grass to the side of the house. At this point I don't have time to do anything with it so I leave.

When I returned home again it was still in the same spot. I invited my parents up to take a look at it. While I was waiting for them, I google wild rabbits. Turns out the best thing to do is return them to their nest. When they don't even have their eyes open they need to be fed milk. I could've probably accomplished this with a dropper but my resources said the number one killer of people taking in wild baby bunnies is overfeeding. Apparently they only spend 3 to 5 minutes of their entire day eating.

When my parents arrived I suggested that we look for the nest. Although I wasn't having any luck finding it. Mom then suggested letting Shiloh out to find the nest. Sure enough, she went straight for the nest. Although the nest was actually empty:

While looking at this I noticed one of his siblings near my foot. So I placed the bunny next to his brother.

Above is the brother. Below is the one Shiloh caught.

It turns out that Shiloh broke his right leg! I don't know if you can tell from the picture above, but his back right foot is turned the wrong way.

I believe I didn't check on them again until the next day. When I go their "spot," they are no longer there but in their nest instead, with siblings!

I believe there was 4 or 5 of them. Oh they were so cute and cuddly! With life being so busy I forget what time and days I checked on them after this. I do know after this shot I saw one wih his eyes open. Sometime after that I returned to the nest to only find the injured one. And the last time I checked on the nest, today, none of them were there. If I were mom I would move the nest too.

So it was fun having them around. I'm sure I'll see them again when they get old enough to devour my greens. I'll be shooing them off then, but love to have them around while they are tiny and harmless.

Things wives hate
Reminds me of Easter a few years back. Got home from church with the in-laws, and beside their front steps were two really tiny little bunnies, nestled in the mulch.

Easter Bunnies!

Of course, yours are more Memorial Day Bunnies. Or if you run across them this Thursday, they could be JFK Bunnies.

Also, "female rabbit" was a clue in one of Rebecca's crosswords last night. The answer was "doe".
Me
Huh. I didn't know that a female rabbit was a doe. Good piece of info to know.
