Easy Peasy Strawberry Barrels

This afternoon I help mom put together some strawberry barrels. They were easy to put together and will hopefully result in some home grown strawberries!

Above are the containers she picked out on the sunny portion of her "boardwalk." Strawberries spread more than they grow deep, so shallow containers work great.

We filled them with soil left over from last year's annual potted plants.

I always like to figure out how I am going to space the plants prior to putting them in the dirt.

Putting them into the dirt took no time at all.

To finish off the barrel we put an onion in the middle of each, because strawberries and onions are companions. I actually don't know how they help each other, but will let you know when I find out.

Putting these pots together probably took 20 minutes or less.

Oh and we put some of the other onions in one of her vegetable beds (she had purchased a bunch of onion starts)

We'll do a row of lettuce next to these onions...'cause lettuce likes onions too.

This is such an inspiring post! I really want to try strawberries in containers up on our deck -- perhaps we'll be able to avoid the critters this way. I didn't realize you could plant so many in one container. Very interesting about the onion companion....
Me
Katie - Thanks! Yeah strawberry containers are easy. I've always wanted a strawberry pot (a pot with all the pockets) and will probably get one for the strawberry starts i have.

yeah you can more or less put as many or as few as you want in a container. it all depends on how fast you want the container to fill up. strawberries definitely spread so a few can go a long way over time.

good luck with your strawberry plantings!
