Hey- I haven't thought about Organic Gardening Magazine in years (my mom used to get it when I was a kid). Maybe I'll start eating more yogurt and score us a subscription. I don't know anything about double-digging and would like to know more.

Hey June - what is double digging? Can you write something about it? Maybe in Organic & Sustainable? If you've got the time, of course. :)

In short double digging is where you losen the ground 12" deep instead of 6" deep. In terms of biointensive gardening part of the idea is that if the roots can grow deeper you can plant things closer together. Although it is best if you companion plant veggies with complimentary root systems. For instance lettuce would work well next to carrots because the roots of the lettuce are much shorter than the roots of the carrot.

Another idea behind double digging is that it preserves the soil structure unlike a heavy duty tiller. Thats a little much to get into here but I will post about it later.
