In the Yard Today

Another beautiful afternoon! I love spring!

So I decided that it would be a good time to plant my pak choi:

I always prefer to place my plants where I want them before sticking them in the ground.

They are a touch close according to the growing instructions, but I think that will be ok. The soil in this bed is pretty loose. Plus I've seen this plant stuffed in a mixed planter before and it was doing just fine.

While I was planting the pak choi, Aaron was taking care of weeds.

He was using a vinegar-salt-soap solution. To make this mix you use:

1 gallon white vinegar
1 C salt
1 T liquid soap

This weed killer is actually a defoliator. By killing off the leaves the plant is no longer able to grow and produce food for itself. To be more specific about what the ingredients do. The vinegar is an acid. The salt dehydrates the leaves and the soap helps the solution stick to the leaves.

While we were working in the front yard several flocks of black ducks flew overhead.

I was kind of able to capture one of the flocks. I really need a better zoom and to get quicker on the draw to get a better picture of them. I believe they do hang out in the area for a bit, so I'll have to go down to the river and see if I can't get a better picture.

After I finished planting my new veggies, I did my daily stroll around the yard. Aaron pointed out that he had trimmed the peach trees. He partially did this as part of its annual clipping, but he also did this to remove some of the fungus/disease.

When your tree gets this type of fungus you are really suppose to chop down the tree....but we're both feeling optimistic that we can bring the tree back to its optimal health. That was part of my reason for planting garlic all around its base.

Before heading in for the night, I decided to pick some yummy greens for dinner!

Starting at the turnip and going clockwise you'll find: sorrel, collards, russian kale, regular kale, and chickweed. I chopped all that up and threw on some carrots, pears, mushrooms, and sunflower seeds. It was yummy and super healthy!

I'm looking forward to more long afternoons in the garden. :)

Wow, June. Your basket of greens is gorgeous! Makes my little flowery plantings seem totally amateur in comparison :) But, I guess it takes all types of gardeners.

I will confess that I also tend to "place" my plants before planting them. I get a little anal about spacing and symmetry. It's a flaw, but I admit to it.
