Happy Spring Equinox! It was a kind of chilly first day of spring here in Asheville. I took a stroll around the yard anyway to see what else was springing up.
This blossom must have opened today or yesterday because I swear it wasn't there a couple days ago. Its the first flower to open on Aaron's peach trees.
My plum tree has flowers opening all over the place. Hopefully the flowers will make it! If I remember correctly, most of the blooms were damaged before they started fruiting. There might be a better word for that.
A closer look at my plum tree blossoms.
Above is my motherwort plant. This one sarted popping up and filling in fast. This plant is very special to me and I have a feeling its going to do well this year. I bought this plant from a really neat guy that sells all kinds of plants and herbal goodies: http://www.dogheadherbfarm.com/
The yarrow I planted in the backyard is doing really well too. I can't wait for it to bloom again.
Sorrel seems to be a plant that comes back to life early. All of sorrel plants got big quick. I love the above variety...the leaves taste like sour apples.

I hope we make it! The average last frost data for our zone says end of April, but I'm almost certain we've had a frost in May every year since I've lived in Asheville (since 2004). Good luck. I want that tree to fruit too! It sounds yummy.
Motherwort is in the mint family. The guy who sold it to me told me all kinds of good stuff about it, but I'm afraid I have forgotten the information. Its definitely a woman herb. My friend Maria, the herbalist, has done a nice little write up about it:

Yarrow is coincidentally another good woman herb as well. I've made a couple tinctures of it. It can be good for cramps. Its also good for stopping the bleeding of cuts (for men and women). On the a side, the previous two sentences may be misleading right next to each other...yarrow doesn't necessarily reduce your menses.
But I'd definitely recommend growing some yarrow. Its easy to grow and good to have on hand.
