Rust on Butterfly Bush?

Monday, June 2nd 2008, 6:48am by Bob

Last year I purchased a small butterfly bush, as my first real foray into shaping up this yard.  At Lance's advice (and contrary to his own actions), I hacked it back hard last autumn.

This spring, it's springing back nicely, but the lower leaves have a sort of "rust" appearance to them.

I know this plant prefers full sun, but my Yard-of-Shade won't allow that.  It's also under the eaves, so probably is deprived of moisture.

Any idea what specifically is wrong (or is this natural?)

Rust?

Bob, I have read that spider mites are often a cause of leaf damage in butterfly bushes. These are really tiny little things that are reddish in color. They're so small that you might not even see them on the leaf. Take a white sheet of paper and hold it under a few leaves. Try to knock mites off the underside of the leaves. You should see little red specs on the paper.

If that's what you see, try an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Both should help get rid of them.

Good luck! I'm curious if that's what it is.
