Lance's Bugs

Wednesday, May 21st 2008, 9:36pm by Bob

If you recall, Lance wrote about his Cicada infestation.  Today, I went over to work from his house since lightning had zotted my phone and internet last night.

This event, which he documented on the 8th of the month, continues unabated.  Plus, apparently his street qualifies for world-wide news.

Today, we ran across videographers from the BBC & Discovery, filming these suckers.

Here Lance speaks with one of the filmers.

The cicadas also provide spooky, anxiety-creating soundtrack from the woods above his house.  The people with the funny accents were recording that also.

The sheer number of insects that are dead, dying, molting, and emerging-from-the-ground is truly stunning.

Me.
Wow. Is this a 17-year cicada emergence or just a huge year for the regular ones?

That last picture is really creepy.

@Claire - this is a 17-year emergence. There are some folks down the street who remember when this happened in 1991. The last picture in Bob's post above is literally off the corner of my front porch. The number of bugs is truly stunning.

This evening I went next door to see what it was like there, and there was literally an army of them in his backyard crawling towards the largest maple tree. The ground was moving under our feet like an Indiana Jones movie. As Jones would say, "Bugs - why'd it have to be bugs?"

Our dogs are very well feed these days.

Oh - and the videographers have been here all week. They now have over 140 hours of video with some time-lapse photography of the bugs emerging, and apparently some quality sound recordings of their buzz - which as Bob mentioned, is this kind of low constant screaming from the trees all around. Creepy!

Eww that is disgusting and creepy. Last year we had a cricket infestation and they were everywhere. I would not go out into my yard if those were out there. I want to hear what it sounds like! Gross just imaging the ground covered in those things gives me the creeps

I remember as a youngster in Missouri we had a 17 year emergence and the cicadas were everywhere. The evening drone of their buzz was deafening. We'd collect the skins after they shed them.
