Almost Still-Life with Snails

Sunday, May 18th 2008, 6:20pm by Bob

Noah and his friend found some snails while playing around the house this evening.

Are all snails inherently pests or food?  Do they attract good birds at least?

None the less, I found them to be a challenging subject for photography.  Unlike ants or caterpillars, which zip out of the frame, and for which you prepare yourself, snails simply ooze out of focus slowly.  In a very passive-aggressive sort of way.

Me
Bob - nice photography! I did a little research and the predators of slugs/snails include:

"toads, snakes, several species of ground beetles and their larvae, wild birds and ducks, with the toad being the most important"

I found this tid bit of info here:

I wonder where I could find some ducks at this hour...

My uncle Mike keeps ducks, in part, to deal with all the slugs and snails in his neck of the Pacific Northwest.

My recollection (and I'm neither doctor nor lawyer) is that the edibility of animals like snails is largely a property of their diet (like arrow poison frogs).
