My Weekend

Sunday, June 29th 2008, 5:13am by tonto

Spent some time yesterday harvesting.  This is one of the best times in the garden when you get to eat what you've been growing.  We have had radish, and broad beans ready for a while, and so took the latest crop from them yesterday.  We also had plenty of potatos to harvest too.

This morning was spent potting on some of the plants that we bought in the garden centre yesterday afternoon.  We have a new rose in one of our borders now, and also an ornamental australian "bottlebrush" plant.

As well as converting our strawberry pot to a geranium pot this year.  That should foil the slugs!

Disaster Strikes

Monday, June 23rd 2008, 3:42am by tonto

I was potting on some of our larger architectural plants yesterday, when disaster struck.  I had just lifted our yucca out of its old pot and was tidying up the rootball, trying to get rid of some the drainage stones that were stuck in amongst the roots when I heard a cracking noise.

I hadn’t noticed but there was damage to main stem, which hadn’t properly healed and was obviously a weak point (I’m guessing that this happened when we moved house, and we hadn’t noticed until now).  The main stem broke clean across at this point!

As there were some sucker stems growing near the base of the old main stem I have repotted this and hope that it will take and a new plant will grow, but I have managed to reduce our yucca which was over two metres high to something that doesn’t quite top six inches!

Duck Weed Skimming

Sunday, June 22nd 2008, 5:21am by tonto

Have been trying to remove as much duck weed as possible from our pond this morning.

This feels like a never ending task, as far as I know there is now other way to do it without killing off other pond plants or the fish, frogs, newts etc.

Always open to suggestions though!

Wildflower and Pond Area

Been working on these today, the wildflower lawn is coming along really well, and I've added some summer bedding plants around the margins of the pond border for some colour later in the year.GerberaWildflower Lawn
